What is the Delftse methode?
People from various countries
and cultures, with different educational backgrounds, are keen to
quickly learn good Dutch. They want to do that at home or under
the guidance of a teacher. With the Delftse methode that is possible.
The central notion underlying
this method is the idea that second language learning does not need
to be terribly difficult; it just involves a lot of work. Didactic
principles The Dutch for Foreigners 'green book' is the best-known
component of the Delftse methode. The method was developed in the
early eighties, by lecturers at Delft University of Technology.
It turned out to be extremely successful. The textbook was recently
completely revised for the third time and various parts were added
for non-native speakers with different educational backgrounds.
What really characterises
the method is its simplicity and clarity. It is based upon the following
didactic principles:
· The core part of the
method is the texts. Words and grammar are acquired by reading and
listening to the texts.
· The texts provide plenty
of information about the Netherlands and cover subjects that are
of importance to foreigners. In a short space of time course participants
learn the most frequently used words so that they are quickly able
to talk about all kinds of matters.
· The actual lessons revolve
mainly around conversation training pertaining to the learned texts.
· Apart from the conversation
training, much attention is devoted to the training of listening
skills.
· From the very beginning
all the important grammar is included.
· Grammar is 'explained'
using examples and without the use of complicated terminology.
· The extensive exercise
material is comprehensive and varied.
· All the words used are
translated into at least twenty different languages. · The material
is very clear which means that participants know exactly what has
to be learnt. Target group The Delftse methode is designed for adults
aged 16 and older. For non-native speakers with a basic education
there is "The Introductory Course" (teaching type: BE); for non-native
speakers with several years of secondary school education there
is "Dutch for Foreigners", the sequel to this being "The Second
Round" (vocational training, higher education (university and college
levels), self study). For foreign course participants or trainee
employees in the metal sector there is "Metal" and for those in
the health care sector there is "The Language of Nursing". |
